Immigration Law: Good or Bad?

For anyone who lives in Arizona, the new immigration law that has been passed is the hot topic. However, the interest of this stretches far beyond the Arizona territory. The law makes the failure to carry immigration documents a crime and give the police broad power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. This freedom of power given to the police is what truly has people arguing bitterly. People that are approving of this new law believe that it will solve the immigration problem in Arizona and rid our country of illegal immigrants, especially if other states pass similar laws. Many will say that the state and government have been too soft on the illegal immigration issues and that this new law is the solution to our problems. They argue that if people look the part, and are unable to provide documentation, that they deserve to be caught and removed from our country. They also argue that if someone is stopped and is able to provide paperwork, that a true American will happily show identification. To many, the belief is that this new law is just and will benefit our nation. Contradictory to paragraph above, a nearly equal amount of people are claiming that this new law is one of the worst acts in government history. These people argue that this new law goes against everything the Constition provides its citizens. They see this as an opportunity to racially profile and harass people of Hispanic heritage. The belief is that this new law is morally wrong against people that are not of white heritage. People against this law will tell you that it is ludicrous and absurd Whether this new law is morally right, or will effective is not one that anyone can know for certain at this point in time. Both sides feel very strongly about this topic and many people argue with great passion. Only in the future will we know what this law will mean for the state of Arizona and the country.
