Secret Savings

Shoes, hair, nails, dress, jewelry, make up, dinner, tickets—school dances can be downright stressful. Not only do students have to worry about whom to go with, but they also have to worry about looking great. Unfortunately, looking great has a price to it. Dresses can get pretty expensive—especially when they are from glamorous stores notorious for their dresses, such as Windsor, but is the name more important than the price? Although the store title isn’t advertised on the dresses that they sell, buyers subconsciously have different feelings about where they buy their dresses.
“I would go into a place that I’m more familiar with,” freshman Qury Kim said, “but I would get the [dress] that I like the most. If I like a cheap dress, then I’ll get that.”
Even though Qury said she would buy a cheaper dress if she liked it more, do all girls feel the same way? Fifteen out of twenty-eight students said that they typically buy their dresses at Windsor, located in the Chandler Fashion Center. The other 13 of them said that they’d buy them at a department store, such as Dillard’s, Nordstrom, Sears, and Macy’s. However, another survey shows that 12 of them said that department stores were the cheapest place to buy dresses, and only 2 of them said that Windsor was. The remaining people said that the cheapest places to go were less popular stores that aren’t marketed for their dresses.
So why is it that even knowing that a department store is far cheaper than Windsor, the majority of people still would buy their dresses there?
“They have the styles that I like,” sophomore Megan Snow said, “Windsor has a lot more options [than other stores].”
Megan is correct when she says that Windsor has a lot of options. In fact, they sell 198 different styles of dresses, while Dillard’s only sells 90, Macys sells 106, and Nordstrom sells 73. What many people don’t know is that Sears sells 153 different styles of dresses, with prices ranging from $6.99 to $40.00. Windsor’s dress prices range from $29.90 to $199.90, with only 45 more styles than Sears. This is a fact that many students here at DV were previously deprived of. All in all, when all of the prices and amount of styles are averaged out, Sears is the best place to find a great deal on looking great.
