Meet Coach  Dave Williams, the  new Varsity Boys Basketball Coach (pending board approval May 19).  He replaces Doug Harris who led the Thunder for seven seasons and a 2008 state championship. The View asked Coach Williams a few questions to help you get to know him.

Q:Can you tell us about your coaching background?

A: I am excited to be in the DV family. My coaching experience spans over 15 years. I am proud to say that my first coaching job was at South Mountain College were I was the first coach to take a team to the regiojal playoffs in the school history. My next job was also at the Jr.College level at Scottsdale College. While at SCC we made the the regional playoffs as well. I also volunteered at Marcos De Niza were my son and I won a state championship in 2002. Most recently I coached an IBL minor league team called the Phoenix, Fury.

Q:Describe what type of coach you are?

A: As a coach I run a fun, fair, consistent defensive program.  I love to empower my players to be the best they can be. Our program will give our players a sense of belonging, usefulness, and influence, and confidence. Our team philosophy is that “ We don’t care who scores, we just want the W.”

Q: What are the challenges of being an off campus coach?

A: I am looking forward to developing an awesome accountable relationship with my players whether  I’m on campus or not.  If for some reason I am not on campus, I believe that we have great instructors and administrators at DV trained in my BTB (Back to Basic) Program. I believe that if our staff can excite our local talented kids to stay at DV we will be able to have a strong consistent program every year.

Q: What excites you most about this job?

A: I am very excited to embrace the DV community as my family. I believe that DV basketball is a sleeping giant. I hope I can wake this giant up. I know that DV won a state championship just three short years ago. So I know that the expectation level at DV is high. I am excited to take my players to a different level of basketball.

Q: What will be your style of play?

A: I love to play tough defense, and then push the ball up and down the court. We want our fans to enjoy the game whether we win or lose. We will develop our guys so that they can perform at a frenzy level of organized chaos.

Q:What do you think of the talent you are inheriting?

A: Most of the high level players from the east valley have trained in my BTB (Back to Basic) Program. I believe that if our staff can excite our local talented kids to stay at DV we will be able to have a strong consistent program every year.
