Desert Vista boy’s volleyball opened their season with a strong win against long time rival Mountain Pointe. Fans came with excited spirit to support their friends on the court. This season with its talented players holds promise, setter Scott Gavin and outside hitter Andrew Gott preformed well. The boys won their opening season scrimmage against Hamilton on the 5th. The win was unsurprising considering the strong team that head coach Ryan Tolman has built. Tolman counts the exciting 2007 state title as one of his most memorable moments with the team “We overcame some difficult injuries and came from the seventh seed to win. No one expected us to win, but we defied the odds and won the first ever indoor state championship for DV,” said Tolman.
Tryouts began February and a promising varsity team was selected. Though the team suffered losses after graduation. Several strong players returned as seniors to compete. These returning players include Scott Gavin, Michael Tileman, and Dan Slosky. Scott Gavin stepped up this year to fill the shoes of last year’s accomplished setter John Sheen. Tolman is optimistic for the upcoming season. “What’s most important is that we improve as the season goes on and that we give ourselves a chance to win in the end.” It’s this spirit that has categorized Desert Vista as one of the region’s most promising teams.
