Leslie Philp, a 2009 Desert Vista graduate, has just published her first book called Mark of Magic. It is first in a series of three books about a young girl who discovers she has supernatural powers. “Originally this novel was going to be a short story,” said Philp, “but as I sat down and began writing it, I thought of more and more ideas to incorporate into the plot.” Readers will follow the young witch on her journey of self discovery.
“Desert Vista definitely helped me decide my career path,” Philp also said, “I actually did not start taking myself seriously as a writer until I went into my sophomore year with Ms. Alice Yamamoto. She brought me out of my shell and taught me to always believe in myself no matter what. I still come back to see how she is because she still remains my mentor and friend.”
Leslie now is a Creative writing and Literature major at Mesa Community College and a journalist for The Mesa Legend.
