Campus News:
• In celebration of Black History Month –here’s your lesson for the day.
Douglas Lee Williams was born in Zachary, Louisiana on August 9, 1955. Williams attended Grambling State University. Doug Williams became starting quarterback at Gambling State mid way through the 1974 season. He was drafted first round in the 1978 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is known for his MVP performance with the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII. He is the only African American starting quarter back to win a Super Bowl. He then retired and became the head football coach of his formal college Grambling State University.

• Hey DV get ready for Valentines Day! The Sophomore Class will be selling roses and carnations at lunch. Starting tommorrow you can pre-order your flowers, and write a special message that will be delivered to that special someone. Carnations will be one for $2, or 3 for $5. Roses will be one for $3 or 2 for $5. Help support your sophomore class!

• If you are planning on going to the BASKETBALL GAME tonight remember to bring all the loose change you can find at home, in the car, etc! Ask your neighbors, friends, to give you theirs. MID FIRST BANK will match all the money we put into their bank machine tonight and give it back to us. Basically we can make up to $1000 for GRAD NIGHT tonight just by depositing loose change. It’s very EASY MONEY. Please help us out! The more money we raise, the more cool prizes there will be!

• GRAD NIGHT T-SHIRTS will be sold tonight. Cost is $15. We have a limited number available so get yours tonight!

• The Swim and Dive Booster Club is selling tickets to the Phoenix Suns vs. Philadelphia 76ers game on Feb. 24th. Buy a discounted ticket and get a free Suns player jersey bag and see yourself on the Jumbotron. There will be prizes for the top 3 ticket sellers – 1st place -2 free tickets to a future Suns game, 2nd place – Exclusive access to the Suns warm-ups, 3rd place – parking pass to the Feb. 24th game. Pick up a flyer at the office to order your tickets.

• The annual Cinderella Affair will be March 26th and March 27th. The dress drive for the boutique will be February 8th through February 21st. Any donations of gently used prom dresses or formal attire would be greatly appreciated. There is a box located in the front office. Thank you for helping make some girls dreams come true!

• The 2009 edition of the NCTE-award winning Desert Vista Literary Magazine, What the Thunder Said, has arrived in the bookstore and is only $5! The Literary Magazine is 141 pages of incredible writing and stunning color photography by Desert Vista students. It only costs $5 and we have a limited number of copies, so pick up your Lit Mag in the bookstore today!

• Don’t forget – all 2010-11 registration sheets are due in the Counseling Office by 3:30 PM on Wednesday. Be sure to get your course requests for next year in by that time.

Club Meetings:

• This weekend our Academic Decathlon team competed at Regionals and has qualified for the State Tournament to be held later this month. Regional team members are: Rudy Chen, Dominic Chen, Elaine Rhoades, Michael Epshtein, Dana Fehnel, Nathan Stout, Ian Bainbridge, Joe Beck, Song Wu.

• Congratulations to many of Desert Vista’s HOSA club members who have qualified for the state health occupation competitions in Tucson this April! Last week, 40 students took online tests in the library to qualify for individual and team events, and 30 students have qualified based on their test scores. 24 of these students placed in the top ten for the state; 12 placed in the top five for their events, and five DV students are currently ranked number one in the state! Our members will be competing for gold medals in events like Creative Problem Solving, Biotechnology, Medical Math, Forensics, Pharmacology, Medical Spelling, Clinical Nursing, Veterinary Assisting and many more!

• Attention, DV Brain Bee competitors! Please stop by Mrs. Musheno’s room, C170, after school today for a three-minute check-in, as we prepare to compete in the Arizona Brain Bee on Wednesday!
• The next FBLA meeting will be Friday! All members need to attend for competition information.
All members who signed up for region competition need to pick up a permission slip.

Sport Announcements:

• Hey Desert Vista, our girls varsity soccer team is on fire! Winning their first playoff game, thunder is on the way to the Semi-Finals this Thursday February 11th. The game will take place at Camp Verde at 7:00pm. The game is a black out, so come out and support our girls!
