Spanish classes, Latin classes, French classes, and German classes are common choices for students. Whether the appeal is the ability to communicate with others or just the desire for knowledge of another language, these classes are often filled. However, many students don’t think about the ability they lack to communicate with people within our nation’s borders. American Sign Language, or ASL, is an important tool to have in order to communicate. Leader in Desert Vista’s sign language club, Allison Benz said, “I hope to help DV understand the deaf culture and how to be in both ‘worlds;’ the deaf and the hearing.” Allison has been signing since she was 7 years old and wants to use her 9 years of experience to teach others.
In the club, students learn ASL, play games, chat with friends, and even watch Glee, the popular TV show. She strives to create a fun, but educational environment for the students who join the club.
“Especially when someone wants to be an audiologist or any other health profession, it is important to know some of the signs to understand the deaf culture here in the USA,” said Benz. As ASL becomes increasingly important for the deaf and hearing cultures alike (many parents teach their babies to sign!), now is a great time to join the club in get involved in the language.
While the club gets off the ground, Allison is looking for those who are interested to contact her. From there, she will conduct a survey and do her best to fit the club around its member’s schedules.
“We have a concert in the Foothills Baptist Church coming up on May 22nd and we are in a dire situation,” said Benz. “We need more people to sign up if they’re interested.”
Be part of an up and coming language in both the school and the nation by joining sign language club!
