My fair musical makes good drama

Accents can be tough to nail. Transforming one’s dialect into an entirely new way of speaking is a much bigger task than it sounds. The cast of DV’s spring musical, My Fair Lady, had to carry a perfect British accent in their performance.

However, this may have been the least of the cast’s challenges. Since mid-January, these students have been memorizing lines, practicing dances, and learning songs. It all paid off. On March 10th, 11th, and 12th, the cast pulled off incredible performances of this play.

“I feel like the final performances really reflected the amount of work that we put in,” said Sam Abney.

My Fair Lady is a musical rendition of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. “Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, makes a bet with Col. Pickering that he can take a common cockney flower girl and transform her to pass off as an upper class princess,” said Mr.. Fajman, director of the play. “The movie version starred Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison,” he continued.

Desert Vista’s version starred Holly Nordquist as Eliza Doolittle, Sam Abney as Henry Higgins, and Chris Binning as Col. Pickering. Other major roles included Amber Justmann as Mrs.. Pearce, Jamie DiCarlo as Alfred Doolittle, Tony Garvey as Freddy and Cristi Scobee as Mrs.. Higgins.

The play featured songs like “I Could Have Danced All Night” and “Wouldn’t It Be Lovely.” The performers were accompanied by DV’s orchestra who did a fantastic job.

Filled to the brim with singing, dancing, and plenty of laughs, My Fair Lady was an excitement for all who saw it and performed in it.

“It’s always fun to be someone other than yourself for a short amount of time,” said Chris Binning.

If you missed the musical, fortunately, the theatre department will be putting on more performances to come. Keep up with DVTV, dvthundermedia.com, or DV’s actors to find out when the next performances will be.
