schute_cafeteria2_news.JPGThe cafeteria is where the choice action happens at lunchtime. Alternatives including whether to stay, inside or outside, along with a smorgasbord of food options at a reasonable price are at your fingertips.

With two lunch periods, the bell rings for you at 11:24 or 12:26. Are you in the mood for pizza, tacos, French fries, or deli sandwiches? What about one of the daily specials you can choose from?  Prices vary for single items of $1.10 to combo lunches to $2.75, so if you have $3 you are set to get lunch atthe cafeteria at DV. Healthy foods are priced lower than greasy option. While the fat foods smells your nostrils as soon as you walk near the cafeteria, you can eat healthy without spending a lot of money, especially the veggie pack for a buck.

If you do choose the pizza, French fries, or candy, just know that these foods are priced higher than the deli sandwiches, salads, and fruits. Vending machines are also available if you are unwilling to wait in line for hot meals. You can get ice creams, chips, candy, soda, and Gatorade from the machines.

Another option for loving lunch is to bring your own. It’s a benefit if you want to avoid waiting in those long lines and would rather have specific food that are yummy for your tummy.

Another thing to be aware of during the lunch hours, is the cafeteria and the courtyard are packed with hungry students eager to eat their lunches and build energy for the last few classes. Students can sit on picnic tables, grassy areas under trees and often line the outside of buildings and stairwells looking for a good place to gather with friends. Still, there are lots of things students wish they could change about this daily block of time.

“(I wish there were) more lines, so people didn’t have to waste their lunch time,” said junior Ace Martinez. “(And) the tables inside are too close together.”

“Just make it bigger,” added freshman, Bridget Agnew.

While both Agnew and Martinez think the lines are too long, but they also agree that the food is great. Agnew said the DV cafeteria is better than her old middle school, Akimel, while Martinez believes the cafeteria is too packed compared to his old school Altadena.
