Too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short, too serious, too calm, and too crazy. These are some of the many image disorders that are affecting teenagers daily.
When you are a teenager, looking good and feeling good is the most of your concern. More and more pressure builds upon you each day to look just right; so that you’re not the one who gets criticized by the way you look.
Throughout DV, many students feel differently about images, their own, and even their peers. Some think that you shouldn’t constantly worry about it and live your life, and some think that it should be a concern most of the time.
“I think that teens should live their life and not worry about their image. Image isn’t everything, so it shouldn’t be a concern most of the time,” said junior Laurel Smith.
The insecurities that teens feel can sometimes take over their lives. For some, if they do get criticized by the way they look, it makes them stress out even more, and makes them want to change the way they look instantly. It makes them feel like they are a different person. Sure, some are happy for a while about their sudden change of appearance, but then wish they were themselves again.
“I think it is wrong for teens to change instantly after being criticized, because they should live how they are. You shouldn’t change based on other people’s opinions,” said sophomore Erin Garritty.
But, the people who are criticizing others about their appearance may be in denial about their own. People, who call other people out about their flaws, may have the same one and want to make themselves feel better by criticizing others.
“I think that people who criticize others about their appearance are in denial about their own because they can’t say their flaws to their own face, so they take it out on other people. Also, people who call others out about their flaws, makes them feel better about themselves,” said freshman Jihan Valencia.
Around the world, especially in “teenage world”, your image can sometimes impact most of your life. But sometimes, you can make that change to take over your image.
