On Tuesday, December 8, 2009 of this week, our Community Counts club brought kids in downtown Phoenix from Wilson Primary School to DV. They wanted to give the kids that they tutor and inspire every three weeks, a taste of the holidays that is celebrated here at our school.

Activities, board games, story time, lunch, and great gifts were provided for the young students throughout their day here at DV. The day began with a trip to the library and the famous book, The Polar Express, was read to the children and then a book that a member of the Community Counts club, read to them in Spanish. After the library, the children were escorted to board games to play for a while with other activities included.

Once the games were over, a fabulous lunch was provided for the kids, which included pizza, drinks, and delicious desserts. When lunch was over, the children were taken to the tennis courts for some fun outdoor games, which concluded the day.

Many of the members of the Community Counts club were overjoyed that the students came to DV. They thought that giving the children a day full of presents and fun activities would give them a great start for the season and boost their spirits for the upcoming holiday. It was a great experience for them.

“It was absolutely amazing! It was a lot of fun working with the kids and it was an awesome experience. It was great that we got the chance to show the kids what kind of community we live in and what it is like,” said freshman Gretchen Proulx.

Giving the children a season to look forward to brings hope for the Community Counts club and gives them wishful thinking that the gifts that were given to the children will be gifts that they will hopefully cherish throughout their holiday season. It was very rewarding to many of them.

“Being apart of this was a very rewarding experience. It great that we’re doing this for the kids and brings many of them hope for their future,” said freshman Alex Gamez
