Many teams surround the Desert Vista campus, but the one team that can be slightly overlooked is The View, which is the DV newspaper. It has not been fully recognized as a major club at DV, but it very well should be. This organization has many dedicated workers that will take any risks necessary in order to make the media aspect of DV a success.
The View has been in production for 14 years. There are 18 students in this journalism class. Mrs. Michelle Coro has been a newspaper advisor for the past 6 years and has been advising student publication for the past 13 years. In previous years, The View staff has produced 8 regular issues and 1 special issue, but because of budget cuts and the fact that it costs $800 to print 2,000 newspapers, only 1 issue has made stands so far this year.
“I think we made a lot of mistakes early on and that sidetracked us. Obviously, we want to be known as one of the premier high school staffs in the state. It’s going to take effort to get here,” said Coro.
This major issue, along with the disappearance of 2 cameras and 2 video cameras, has had a large impact on the success of The View staff this year. However, a brand new feature that has been added to the class this year has given the reporters on The View a new lease on life. It is an online newspaper publishing website entitled dvthundermedia.com.
“I like the fact that we can easily access a site that other students can check on a daily basis. Just being able to get the news out there quickly is great,” said Angie Bumstead, a freshman.
Because of this website and the determination of members of The View staff, things are looking up in the world of publishing at DV.
“The Radical Write helps us a lot with our writing. All of us working together helps us become good reporters,” said Sami El-Sayed, a freshman.
The View staff has come a long way since the beginning of the year, and they continue to improve with each passing story. The financial struggles have made it hard for printed newspapers to be frequently distributed, but dvthundermedia.com has helped to make up for it. There still is a lot of work to be done, but with team spirit and the drive to succeed, journalism will finally be considered a major club at DV.
