Desert Vista’s newspaper, The View, has been around more than a decade and has caught the eyes of the students and faculty members.
The View has a tradition of printing of regular newspapers, but this year was different. The staff members, along with Mrs. Coro, continue the idea of printing papers. But Coro came to the conclusion of using more of an online source to supply the stories.
Staff writer Lindsey Laski shares her opinions towards the online newspaper: “ I think that this is a step into the right direction and that this will definately make our paper more cohesive in the media.”
With a total of eighteen students in the class, each of them uploads a story to the online database. It sounds easy but is far more complicated than it seems. Coro shares her opinion on the advancement in the school paper: “ My vision is to have a full-scale media program. I want to help make journalists of tomorrow who are confident in writing and taking photos, shooting video, working with the web, designing, producing audio and more.”
The progress is astounding and also a great leap for Coro to want to do more than the printed-papers of the past but the digital media of the futre. It’s this digital aspect of writing that she is pushing students to take a new journey with the class.
This transition was not easy, for the staff writers have made many mistakes when it comes to writing, but still strive for perfection. Mrs. Coro states why she believes her students are the cream of the crop: “ I think we made a lot of mistakes early on that sidetracked us. Obviously, we want to be known as one of the premier high school staffs in the state. It’s going to take effort to get here.” True to the obstacle, it was hard transitioning to an online database and having to constantly upload contently weekly, but hey that’s a journalist’s job.
Many online stories have been posted, but only one printed-paper was made this year. Mrs. Coro states her beliefs toward this somewhat of a disappointment: “ Working on a newspaper is not for everyone. There is a certain level of maturity and self-motivation that has to be inherent in a staffer. This is not the type of class that you get an assignment, review it and take a quiz. It’s much more like a team. Producing a publication is a combined effort.” Many may not be up to the task of writing great detailed papers that are true to a cause and have information that must be shared. The View is there ready to report with stories always posted and ready for more action.
The View is a work in progress and always on the lookout for juicy stories. Always more work is needed to be done, as always, but will be done in aspects for the team. Mrs. Coro speaks on behalf of her new team of journalists: “ We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the semester, but we have still a good distance to go before we reach our fullest capabilities.” That being said The View is a Team sanding together and working together to reach the goal of upmost perfection.
With the View standing out in the media and ready for action staff writer Katie Giel tells how she feels about her new online newspaper: “ Its really not to bad, I believe that it can help show more than what an old printed paper is capable of.”
