Desert vista girls basketball has improved drastically from last year with the current record of 18-4, recently losing to mountain view 70-56. This is a major improvement from last year with the record of 12-16, they have come along way by being dedicated and hardworking. Mesa mountain view game was a huge disappointment to our desert vista girls even with one minute in the game they battled hard right to the very end. It was a close game until the end of the 2nd half when the game against Mesa Mountian view high school finished very strong from the 3-pointers, layups and put backs.

“We could have played better but most importantly we tried our best ;It’s a disappointing loss . No loss is ever easy. For now we need to keep our heads high and be prepared for Chandler High tonight.” said Tinisha Toussaint

Currently, Desert Vista is ranked 7th in state and 267 in the nation, averaging 63.3 points per game,12.3 assist per game,37 rebounds and 10.4 steals per game. This is the best record desert vista girls basketball has ever had, last year was difficult for them, Mesa Mountian View beat them making them lose their first game into the state finals (63-51) , the 2010-2011 season ended with a major downfall. This year they will have to take a step forward and rise up to their expectations .

“We want to win state so bad , and I know we can do it.” said Jaymee Brugman

Students all over DV thought that Hoopcoming and Prom were going to be the only dances we would have this year. Little did they know, Student Council, led by student body president Julia Thatcher, believed that they could make another dance happen.

Hoopcoming is back due efforts of Student Council asking and fighting administration.

“We really wanted to have another all school dance because the underclassmen can’t go to prom,” said Student body president Julia Thatcher

The dance will be space jammed theme but the attire is a basketball jersey!

“Student Council really wanted to make the theme fun and exciting. I don’t think we’ve ever had a space jam themed dance before,” said Thatcher.

Many students all over campus was very excited and anxious for the game and couldn’t wait for the Friday madness.

“I’m so excited! I’ve heard so much about how much fun Hoopcoming was and I can’t wait to go and dance my butt off,” said Freshmen Laina Goldwin.

Tickets were ten dollars but were only five dollars if you attend the Boys basketball game vs. Chandler High School before the dance. The freshmen boys’ game began at 4pm, JV played at 5:30pm and Varsity tip-ed off at 7pm.

It was a tough fight but the Thunder topped the CHS Wolves, 66-66. After the exciting win, students in the arena hyped and ready to dance. The small gym quickly filled with students, not only with fans that just came from the game but students that just arrived ready to dance.

“The atmosphere was great and I had so much fun, I wish there was more casual dances like this,” said Sophomore Amber Gregory.

With many students asking for more, it’s safe the say that Hoopcoming was a hit.

With a record of fourteen wins and seven losses, the Boy’s Varsity Basketball team has been on a role. After winning 58-57 against our biggest rivals, Mountain Pointe, the Boy’s basketball team will be celebrating their next home game with Hoopcoming.

The theme for this year’s Hoop-coming is Space Jam and will be taking place right after the big game. Although everyone is excited for the big Hoopcoming dance, some students are biting their nails over the hoop-coming game against the Chandler Wolves.

“I think we will win, “ Abbey Buchalter said, “We have plenty of spirit and dedication and it will all pay off in the game. Other than that, the players should just have fun and enjoy themselves.”

Having played Chandler High before, who have a record of eight wins and fourteen losses, other’s weren’t concerned at all, “ We beat them 69 to 57 last time we played them, I think we will cream them,” Kacey Curtain said. “This game will definitely be very fun to watch!”

For the more aggressive ladies out there, it is the closest sport to football for a girl here on campus. Although it is a popular sport for many boys, don’t underestimate DV Girls Lacrosse. This action-packed sport is perfectly designed for girls who love to be intimidated, are aggressive, fast runners, and have good hand-eye coordination.

This team is not considered a sport at this school because of certain state limitations, but it is a club. This means that you don’t have to try-out, or be good at the sport to join. However, this 2012 team is stuck in tizzy. For, they are short on players, especially a goalie.

“We don’t have as many people as we would like to this year,” said Alyssa Golberg, a junior on the team who has been playing for 6 or 7 years, “ For a while we needed a coach, but now we have one, and we currently need a goalie”.

This action-packed sport is perfectly designed for girls who love to be intimidated, are aggressive, fast runners, and have good hand-eye coordination.

“Even if you don’t have specific skills for this sport, you will develop them fast” said Golberg, “But it is a lot of fun and everyone is really nice here.”

Many girls get concerned about the attire for girls lacrosse: Will we wear a helmet? Does it have to be a specific color? What stick should I get? How much does it cost? What shoes should I get? The uniform for this sport is actually quite simple: Eye goggles, mouth-guard, a girls stick, and gloves which are optional.

The girls have hope for a good season even though they are in division 1, which is the highest ranking. They play their first games in the up-coming Southwest Round-up Tournament, later this month.

The season ended with a bang as the varsity football team viciously took victory from the Hamilton Huskies at the state championship. The boys have turned in their uniforms, and put the ball away for now—but for some athletes, they’ve put away the football and taken out the basketball.

Thunder struck and victory was ours as the varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Pinnacle with a score of 70 to 55 at the first game of the season. The players are jumping into action, and clearly doing a good job at it. The boys ended Pinnacle’s winning streak of 5-0, and added a win to their own ratio. Then again on December 1st, the boys tackled another win for DV against St. Mary’s with a final score of 73-53. The team finished the first week strong by winning once again against McClintock.

“I think our team has a good chance of doing some spectacular things,” senior player Matt Geranen said. “If we work together as a team, I believe we could go deep into the playoffs, and possibly achieve our ultimate goal, and bring home another state championship trophy.”

Geranen was also a wide receiver for our champion football team. “I think that the football team has more chemistry than any team of any sport could ever have,” Matt tells The View. “The chemistry of the basketball team will grow as the season progresses, and it will be a critical component of our teams success. As the chemistry of the basketball team grows stronger, it will lead us to a better record and a better chance at bringing home the championship. The bond we shared in football was a key to our success, as it is in every sport.”

Students can only hope that this season ends as great as it started, and as great as the last season ended. With a first week as promising as this, there’s no doubt that our basketball team will be able to carry us far this winter.

Desert Vista fall sports didn’t end quietly as both the varsity football team and the marching band took home victory over the rest of Arizona and many of the other teams came in as runners-up. No season bringing this much victory could go un-noticed, and if won’t be forgotten any time soon. In fact, student council put the spray paint to use and decorated enough posters to fill the courtyard with spirit. With a few posters for each sport, the teams can’t help but feel supported.

“I personally spent about 7 hours tracing and painting 5 about 9 foot posters, 3 for football and 2 for band,” senior student-council member and school president Julia Thatcher said. “I had everyone get [to school] at 7:30 to make and hang posters for all the champions. We had to find out dates of events, what exactly needs to be advertised, all the details, and creative new ways to say it.”

After all the work and effort put into making the teams feel special, the courtyard décor was nothing less than a spectacular way to do so. The athletes couldn’t feel more appreciated.

“It was a really good feeling to have all the posters up,” senior football player Matt Geranen said. “It showed how much support we had, and it shows how much our school does for our program.”

With student council having plans to make posters at least once a week, it is sure that the spirit will not die any time soon.

This just in: Huskies found meddling around in the University of Phoenix stadium, where they most definitely did not belong, wandered the field lost and confused. Without any strength left to push them forward, the Huskies’ team stumbled around on Saturday afternoon at 2pm as a storm began to brew. A wave of Thunder shook the open sky dome and lightning bolts pierced through goal posts in an intimidating matter that ended in a 45-19 victory for Desert Vista.

The dazed Huskies ran for cover after the Thunder stormed the field as a unified team.

One by one, the bolts of energy and enthusiasm carried by the Thunder team defeated every play the Husky team had on the cold green field. Victorious sounds of thunder roared as fans who believed DV could and would take the win.
Hamilton’s 53 game streak, a national record, came to an abrupt end. The east side of stadium where the Arizona Cardinals normally play were filled with students covered dressed in white attire, cheering on their boys as who controlled the field for most of the 48-minutes of play.

From the opening kickoff throughout most of the first quarter, DV’s football team left Hamilton’s huskies in the dust. An early look at the scoreboard of 31-7 also brought angry looks from many of the Hamilton fans’ faces.

On the Wednesday before the big game which had to be played two-days into Thanksgiving Break, Student Council sold State Championship long sleeved shirts and sweatshirts for the game.
“One electrified husky, coming up!” Julia Thatcher shouted when a student asks for a medium shirt. The overall 13-1 record of DV’s 2011 football team is far from perfect despite the big win, but it sure felt that way with a perfect ending to the season.

Students already in their running shoes and tank tops are sprinting, throwing, and jumping their way to prepare for 2012’s track season. Starting in the midst of November, when their season doesn’t even start until February, students who participate in track are already excited to start preseason. Many students filed into the cafeteria Wednesday16th to hear Coach Cassandra Kline talk about the up coming track season.
Depending event that students participate in, depends on the days that they go to preseason. For example, a thrower (someone who throws a discus or shotput) and a jumper (someone who participates in long jump or high jump), would be on different days. Certain workouts are distributed to the various events and the amount of people participating in them.
“Everyone has a specific day that they go and work on their event,” Jessica Goswick says. “Some people get up early in the morning to go, while others workout after school, it all just depends on the event.”
While preseason may be forced upon some students, due to their parent’s wishes, other students participate to hang out with friends and keep themselves in shape.
“I love to run and be apart of a team, while feeling challenged and keeping myself in shape,” says Erica Sanders, an excited freshman.
Other students just enjoy the feeling of contributing to a team and making new friends.
“I just like to run and track is a great way to stay active and meet new people,” said Amber Wright.
No matter if students are slow and out of shape, track is a sport for anyone who wants to challenge themselves and contribute to a team, season, and a family.
“We are like a family already, helping each other and pushing each other to get better.” Sanders said.

After struggling for most of the season, the girls golf team pulled together to have their chance for a state title, a feat the majority of schools throughout the state couldn’t reach.

“We had a very interesting season, and although they had changed the rules this year to make it harder to qualify for state, my team and their infinite wisdom did not plan on making it easy,” Desert Vista girls Golf coach, Pierson Hamilton.

The team won the Tempe City tournament after four unsuccessful tries by only missing a shot or two. “We won by forty shots and played a great third day!” said Hamilton.

The girl’s golf team member said the new rules created more frustration for the season. “We would get close and then miss by a shot and would not qualifym” Hamilton said.

Only eleven teams qualified for state so the DV team was proud to say they were one of few to make it through.

“The practices were time consuming and tiring but we played through rain and shine to get better,” said Caty Espinoza. “Most people did not know that DV had a girls golf team, and I feel we should have been more recognized for our hard work. We had been a great team and a good group of girls.”

The small team only had six players, a few of them playing for the first time.

“Golf isn’t just an individual sport it is a team and with the bus rides and going to practices we were just like a family,” said Danielle Leblanc, another teammate. “Golf is a lot of fun. You do socialize with people and the matches are really just getting with people you do not know and becoming friends. If you are just playing to be good, golf is definitely more of an individual sport, but if you are playing for fun it is a nice way to get to know the people you are playing with.”

DV’s team finished sixth in state competition, 360-341–701 +125. Senior Kassidy Long-Goheen placed 10th in state individual play, 78-74–152.

Here at Desert Vista, the athletics come first. Bad grades just does not cut it, with a D there is no way D.V. coaches will let you play.To play a sport you are required to have a C or higher and not have gotten in any serious trouble. This rule being empowered upon players, there are many who crack under the pressure that grades bring on.
Pre-season basketball allows students to take care of their grades, while getting trained and ready to go for the real deal. Sometimes making the team is not enough, you need to be prepared and ready for the competition ahead. Pre-season helps you succeed.
“ There is no drama! We love our team-mates. If we have drama, we fix it. There is no talking about each other behind their backs. We respect everyone feelings,we are all there for each other,” the 2011 basketball captains agreed.
Team bonding is an essential to a working and focused team. Without cooperation, and devotion and friendship, teams would be more negative than positive. Bonding helps with the teams strategy on the court.

“ No friendship means no sharing, which altogether means no wins. We all understand that basketball is just a game,” Kylie Butler said.
