Desert Vista fall sports didn’t end quietly as both the varsity football team and the marching band took home victory over the rest of Arizona and many of the other teams came in as runners-up. No season bringing this much victory could go un-noticed, and if won’t be forgotten any time soon. In fact, student council put the spray paint to use and decorated enough posters to fill the courtyard with spirit. With a few posters for each sport, the teams can’t help but feel supported.

“I personally spent about 7 hours tracing and painting 5 about 9 foot posters, 3 for football and 2 for band,” senior student-council member and school president Julia Thatcher said. “I had everyone get [to school] at 7:30 to make and hang posters for all the champions. We had to find out dates of events, what exactly needs to be advertised, all the details, and creative new ways to say it.”

After all the work and effort put into making the teams feel special, the courtyard décor was nothing less than a spectacular way to do so. The athletes couldn’t feel more appreciated.

“It was a really good feeling to have all the posters up,” senior football player Matt Geranen said. “It showed how much support we had, and it shows how much our school does for our program.”

With student council having plans to make posters at least once a week, it is sure that the spirit will not die any time soon.

Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, DV partnered up with the Arizona Cardinals to organize a special assembly. The assembly was optional for teachers and classes, but many showed up to honor breast cancer survivors.

The Cardinals mascot Big Red and Big Blue, were introduced first to the pumped- up crowd. The Senior Dance Company danced a smashing number after Cardinals offensive linemen Jeremy Bridges and kicker Jay Feely ran out to loud cheering and applause. Next, the Varsity players walked in sporting their brand new Pink and White breast cancer awareness jerseys.

Cancer survivors including our very own nurse, Jean Kennedy was introduced to thunderous applause from the students and staff that were gathered there. They were presented with a special pink breast cancer shirt by the captains of the varsity football team, Hunter Rodriguez, Michael Arredondo, Ryan Ortega, and JJ Dielman. Bridges and Feely also gave them tickets to a Cardinals game and an invitation to a team dinner.

The students were having a great time at the assembly. “The assembly was so much fun! I was so pumped up when the mascots came out,” said Qury Kim

Dr. Anna Battle also spoke, and gave a very inspiring speech about breast cancer and how it affects women around the world. Breast cancer is the leading cause in death in women, after lung cancer. There are cancer runs, benefits, and fundraisers that people can participate in to make a stand to fight breast cancer. The bookstore sold pink shirts for the Westwood football game and all profits made went to breast cancer research.

Every Friday, a large amount of our student body and the community attend our Desert Vista football games, and have a blast. But what exactly do they like the most about these games that makes them so eager to go? “I just love hanging out at the games and cheering for DV!” said Jordan Trout. This is perhaps the most common reason students go to the football games, which is to hang out with friends and cheer on our boys.

Some students also love dressing up for the games! Every week there is a new spirit theme for the game and many students go all out.“ I love the spirit ideas.” said Morgan McFadden. A great number of students at school also love the themes and dressing up for them. “I have a ton of fun dressing up for the game, because I love showing school spirit.” said Aoife Malone.

A number of students said they go to the game for the food. “ I like going because the snacks are so good.” said Christian Perez. There is always food for the games, and there is always many people in line to get something to chow on during the game. A few other students also said that the food at the games are excellent! “I love the popcorn, and the Jamba Juice are my favorite.” said Christian.

Even though a majority of our school goes to the football games, some students aren’t so excited for them. Many of the students that don’t go say it’s either because football gets boring, or because they don’t like the long lines and crowding. “ I don’t really go to a lot of games, because the game gets kind of boring.” said Stephenie Christensen. Some students also complained about the lines to go in are too long, and they don’t like waiting. “But it’s well worth the wait to get into the game!” said Morgan. So weather you love going to the games, or you don’t, it is still a fun event where you can cheer on your team and at the same time socialize with your friends!
