The last play of the year for Desert Vista’s theater company was sure to entertain audiences. Kenny Fajman, the director, has put togeteher a talented cast to portray this emotionally charged drama. “Lillian Hellman was won of was one of America’s best and most challenging playwrites. When I feel I have a possible cast that can portray her work I jump at it,” said Fajman. “Children’s Hour” certainly will be a challenge, the play released in 1934 shocked and enthralled audiences. The screen version released in 1961 caused even more uproar due to the taboo content.
Karen Wright and Martha Dobie headmistresses of a small girl’s boarding school are accused of having a lesbian affair after a mischevious student lies to prevent her return to the school. The content as well as the portrayal of the young girl as a machiavellian conspirator made the play a controversial and Hellman a major player in the playwright community . Fajman was confident in his student’s ability to portray the complicated and delicate story line. “I look forward to executing one of the most difficult plays. The audience will witness a rollercoaster of tremendous emotional voltage on stage,” he said before the play went up.
